Incident Summary:        

Kalamazoo Township police officers were called to the scene of a traffic crash in the 4100
block of North Westnedge late this afternoon.  Witnesses reported a motorcycle driven by
Steven Michael Merriam, 25 years old of Cooper Township, was traveling north at a high rate
of speed (well in excess of the 35 mph posted speed) when he struck a sport utility vehicle
exiting a private drive.  Mr. Merriam suffered serious head and chest injuries and was
pronounced dead at the scene.  He was not wearing a helmet.  The driver of the SUV, a 74
year old Middleville man, was transported to Borgess Medical Center by friends for
treatment of minor lacerations from broken glass.  His name is not being released at this time.

The Kalamazoo County Medical Examiner’s office will perform an autopsy on Mr. Merriam,
the date and time of which has not been determined.  Township Police were assisted at the
scene by a traffic crash reconstructionist from the Michigan State Police 5th District

LOCATION OCCURRED:    2432 N. Drake, Kalamazoo MI  
                                        Kalamazoo Central High School
VICTIM INFO:  A female member of the school staff
Township of Kalamazoo Police officers responded to a request for assistance from school officials this
morning at Kalamazoo Central High School.  School staff reported a 16 year old female student
attempted to stab a school staff member with a knife.  The incident was unprovoked and occurred in a
hallway while the other students were in class. School security personnel and staff on-scene were able
to immediately disarm the student and detain her until officers arrived.

The 16 year old suspect was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Juvenile Home.  The Kalamazoo
County Prosecutor’s Office reviewed the case and authorized a petition in Family Court for felonious
assault.  The suspect remains in the Juvenile Home.
